Tutorial 1
This illustration was done entirely in Adobe Illustrator CS2.

Trace portrait using the "Pen" tool. Trace the light and shadow parts as well.

Use the "Eyedropper" tool to pick the colors from the photograph. With those colors create a series of gradation colors; then apply them to all of those shapes one at the time. You can adjust the gradation using the "Gradient" tool.

After the coloring is done, create a shade with 90% transparency applied to the glasses.

Continue with creating the body part. Then combine the finished head drawing with the body. Tilt the head a bit to fit with the posture of the body. After that, continue with coloring the body as well.

After coloring of the body is finished, draw the background landscape. Combine the two drawings and you have a finished drawing for the cover of a retirement card.

For the button design, apply "Type on the Path" tool to a circle. Using the "Star" tool create several stars. Put them together in a composition and color them. Apply the "Radial Gradient" tool to the circle to create a depth for the button.
